Cardall's Corner - April 2011 - Weddings in the News

Spring is here again and many couples will be hoping to tie the knot and start out on a new life together. Southam has a brand new wedding venue and later in the month we have the spectacle of Prince William’s marriage to Katherine Middleton to look forward to.

The Cardall Collection has many items relating to local weddings and one of its most treasured possessions is a fabulous wedding dress worn by Florence Cardall when she married George Adams exactly 100 years ago in 1911. The dress, made of cream satin and lace, is in three pieces and, although floor length as one would expect, does not appear to have a train.

The three parts consist of a high neck bodice with a great many hooks and fastenings, a floor length skirt attaching to the bodice and a wide cummerbund type belt to cover the joining of the skirt and bodice. As well as the myriad fastenings for the bodice, the waist of the skirt is approximately 18 inches – try and get into that girls! No, don’t even think about it – young ladies were generally a lot smaller in those days. In the picture you see Florence wearing the dress with her new husband – he probably spent as long curling that moustache as she did getting into the dress.

The Cardall Collection contains many artefacts and documents depicting the history of Southam and surrounding villages.
